Our Assumptions

Here are a few points we won’t take time to defend or argue. We figured Iwed just get them out up front.

Please note: We believe the defense of these points is worthwhile; it’s just not our purpose on this site.  For helpful resources, check out a site like Apologetics 315.

  1. The Bible is God’s Word.
  2. God wants people to understand his Word.
  3. God spoke through human authors by means of ordinary written communication that was understandable in its time.
  4. The Bible should be translated into modern languages so modern people can know it. Many English translations faithfully capture the meaning of the original text.
  5. God wants all kinds of people to know him and have life. Therefore, our method for studying the Bible should be simple enough to engage young children yet profound enough to occupy erudite scholars.
  6. The Bible is all about Jesus (who is the Word of God), and how God’s plans are worked out in Him.
  7. Preachers and teachers have an important role in Christ’s Church. Part of that role is to teach God’s Word to God’s people. Teaching God’s Word includes teaching people how to read and study it.
  8. We’re not the only ones in the world who care about God, Jesus, and the Bible. Our bloggers are neither better people nor more committed Christians than other Bible teachers. We need God’s help, and we invite your help.

Two additions came to my mind which would make 10 points in total:
    9. Reading and studying the Bible on your own and with others is essential for Christian growth, which will increasingly enable the Christian to be an effective follower of Christ.
    10. While preachers and teachers have an important role in Christ’s Church (Ephesians 4:11-12), this is just the beginning. The goal is mutual edification (Ephesians 4:16). Each and every Christian should be able to edify the body. Studying the Bible equips the Christian to do just that.
