Congratulations to Winners of the Drawing!

Many thanks, and great job to all who participated in this year’s 90-day Bible reading challenge. This year, we had 34 people complete the Bible reading challenge—22 of them for the first time. With the bonus entries granted for those who recruited others to complete the challenge, there were 42 total entries.

What People Thought

As usual, there were a variety of perspectives on the rapid reading experience. Some loved it:

  • Someone who completed the Bible in 24 days: “It serves well, as a companion, with other bible reading I do the rest of the year. Two things stood out to me, neither of which was anticipated. Early, while reading the OT, I began to notice things about “covenant” I had not really seen before. I, then, began paying more attention to things about covenant throughout the rest of the reading. The other was the book of Isaiah. I have never really understood what was going on in Isaiah, and still don’t for that matter. However various parts, here and there, caught my attention, and started to become little pegs in the larger book that I could begin building a better understanding of the book.”
  • 89 days: “While it was challenging, this is one of the most formative experiences I have had. I have always been a Bible reader, but there is something about reading such large chunks of the Bible in context in one sitting that seems to allow for better understanding of what is happening. I’m not sure this is a sustainable practice for me, because I had to take some Saturdays and do multiple readings when I got behind, but I can see myself doing it again. Maybe once a year.”
  • 89 days: “Last year was my first to participate in the 90-day challenge and I loved it. This year was even better.”

Others were not as enthusiastic, but still endured through the challenge:

  • 69 days: “It’s good and I’ll be glad to read more slowly again.”
  • 49 days: “Refreshing in one sense, but also a ‘dutiful’ sense in needing to keep moving without lingering. Almost a burden.”
  • 81 days: “Great for the bigger picture but hard to enjoy the parts I’m already familiar with.”

Perhaps my favorite response came from a first-timer, who completed the Bible in 84 days:

For starters I am Orthodox, my primary is the NKJV, I decided to give the CSB a try, and was amazed about how smooth the reading experience was. It was hard to put down, lol. This led me to order the CSB Ancient Faith study Bible (my next project, very excited about that).

Reading Challenge Reminder

Don’t forget we’ve got a Bible reading challenge underway. There’s still time to finish reading the entire Bible within 90 days, and you could enter to win a premium book binding (generously provided by the good people at Pro Libris Rebinding), or an additional prize package.

Reading must be completed within 90 days, and by March 31. See this post for the complete rules. Once you’ve completed your reading, you may enter the drawing with this form.

Entries that do not meet the guidelines (for example, reading period longer than 90 days, reading period is outside the allowable dates, or form is submitted before you finished reading) will not be counted in the drawing.

It’s like the Day of Pentecost, but on a far smaller scale (Acts 2:8)!

I’d like to introduce you, virtually, to Sarah Oiler. She’s a fine young woman who loves Jesus and the Holy Scripture.

Sarah has taken on a project of translating articles from the Knowable Word archive into Spanish. We’ve previously had the honor of a few others translating our posts in other internet spaces. But we’ll be publishing Sarah’s work right here.

So every Tuesday, we’ll publish one of her translated posts, until either Jesus comes back or our neighbors run out of jugs (2 Kings 4:6)—whichever comes first.

If you speak Spanish or have connections with a Spanish-speaking community, we pray these posts will be a blessing to you. Do feel free to share them around! If you don’t speak Spanish, thank you for bearing with the additional parcels showing up in your email or feed reader each week.

Announcing the 2026 Bible Reading Challenge

We believe one of the best ways to learn to study the Bible is to read it. A lot of it. Over and over again. That way, when the foundations are destroyed, the righteous will know what to do. When the wicked bend the bow, the children of God hide in the one who is their refuge. When surrounded by those who have lost their minds, the people of God have sure footing and a stabilizing security.

If you’re not sure what I mean by all these foundations/bow/sure footing metaphors, then maybe this is your year to read the entire Bible in 90 days. Objective truth and emotional stability are yours for the taking. Not by toughening yourself up (Prov 18:11, 26:12), but by perceiving who really sits on throne (Psalm 11:1-7, Matt 6:19-21). You’ll only see, though, if you’ve got the eyes for it.

But I digress and perhaps ought to get to the point.

The Challenge

I’m writing to announce our 2026 Bible reading challenge. The challenge is to read the entire Bible within 90 days. If you wish, you may begin today. Regardless of when you begin, your 90-day period must end no later than March 31, 2026. Once you complete your reading, you may submit an entry form (see below) to enter a prize drawing.

And why—you ask—would you embark on such a strange venture? (“Has the day finally come,” they inquire, “when the Lord has struck with madness the riders of this horse we call the blogosphere?” Zech 12:4, my paraphrase.) I can think of at least three reasons.

  1. Your grasp of the Bible’s big picture will surge like a “little” cloud in the shape of a man’s hand (1 Kings 18:44-45).
  2. Your reward in the age to come will be great.
  3. We’ve got a sweet set of prizes to urge you on in the present age.

Due to popular demand from last year, we’ve got a repeat grand prize for you this year. And for every 10 people who complete this year’s challenge, there will be an additional prize package. On top of all that, we will grant extra entries into the drawing for anyone who recruits first-timers to complete the challenge with them.

Grand Prize

Back by popular demand, this year’s grand prize is a premium book rebinding provided by Pro Libris Rebinding. Many thanks to Pro Libris for their generous provision of this prize for our giveaway. The winner of this prize is invited to take their favorite Bible, novel, or other book, send it to Pro Libris, and have it re-bound with a premium leather cover and binding. Or if you can’t decide which book of your own to get rebound, we will provide you with a free copy of a one-volume reader’s Bible of your choice, and Pro Libris will give it the premium treatment. We want you to read and re-read God’s word for years to come, so we’re offering this prize to catalyze a habit of such delightful romps.

Additional Prizes

But wait, there’s more! In addition to the grand prize, we will offer one additional prize for every 10 people who complete this year’s Bible reading challenge. That means that if only 10 people complete the challenge, one of them will win the grand prize, and one will get an additional prize. If 100 people complete the challenge, one will win the grand prize, and ten will secure an additional prize.

That means your odds of winning a prize are greater than 10%. (Last year, 11.7% of participants won prizes.) Can you find any other giveaway on the Internet with such great odds of winning? And though the physical discipline and training of reading the Bible in 90 days is of some value, the character and godliness which it instills in you holds promise not only for the present life but also for the life to come.

Everyone selected to win an additional prize will get to choose one of the following options:

  1. A one-volume reader’s Bible of your choice.
  2. A copy of both Knowable Word and Sowable Word.

Please note: Physical prizes are limited to people with addresses in the United States. Winners in other parts of the world will receive a $50 Amazon gift card via email.

Referral Bonus

On the entry form for this year’s challenge, there will be a place for you to mark whether this is your first time completing the challenge. And if it is your first time, there will be a place for you to provide the name of the person who recruited you to try the challenge.

Both recruits and recruiters will benefit:

  • First-timers will gain one extra entry in the drawing for naming the person who recruited them to this year’s challenge, if that recruiter also completes this year’s challenge.
  • Anyone who completes the challenge and is mentioned by one or more first-timers who also complete the challenge will gain three extra entries in the drawing for each person they recruited to complete the challenge.

Note that both the recruit and the recruiter must complete the challenge. All recruits must be first-timers; recruiters can be either returnees or first-timers themselves.

And as usual, fake, incomplete, or spam entries will be deleted. For example, anyone who fills out the form today or tomorrow clearly hasn’t read the entire Bible within the time window, so their entries won’t count. Also, entries submitted before Bible reading has been completed will be thrown out; this drawing is only for those who read the Bible in 90 days and not for those who intend to read the Bible in 90 days.

So it will do you no good to recruit millions of people to complete the entry form without completing the actual reading challenge. God sees and knows what you are up to, and your entries will be chucked to the place where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.

Here are the rules:

  1. You must read (not scan or skim) all 66 books of the Protestant Bible. You may choose the translation and reading plan (canonical, chronological, etc.). You don’t have to stop and meditate on every detail, but the Lord sees and knows when you are being honest about reading and not skimming. Listening to an unabridged audio Bible is acceptable. You may also use any combination of audio and visual reading, as long as you’ve read or listened to the entire Bible within the allotted time period.
  2. You must read the entire Bible within a 90-day period.
  3. The last day of that 90-day period must be between November 9, 2025 and March 31, 2026. If you’d like to understand why we recommend such fast-paced reading, see our Bible reading plan for readers.
  4. To enter the drawing, you must fill out the survey below, letting us know the dates you read and what you thought of the speed-reading process. Your thoughts do not have to be glowing, but they should be honest; you’ll still be entered into the drawing if you didn’t enjoy your speed-read.
  5. Any submissions to the form below that don’t meet the requirements or appear to be fabricated will be deleted. For example: multiple entries with different data, date of completion not between November 9, 2025 and March 31, 2026, “What I thought about the experience” has nothing to do with Bible reading, or date of completion is later than the date of entry submission (please don’t try to enter the drawing if you plan to read the Bible; only enter once you have completed reading it).
  6. In the first week of April 2025, we will randomly select 1 grand-prize winner from those who have submitted the form.
  7. Then we will randomly select, for an additional prize package, one winner for every 10 legitimate submissions to the drawing (e.g. 50 total submissions means 5 additional prize packages).
  8. We will email all winners (both grand-prize and additional-prize) requesting contact info to deliver their prize. If a winner does not respond to our request for information (such as a shipping address) within 1 week, a new winner will be selected in their place.
  9. The grand-prize winner (if in US) will receive a premium book rebinding for a Bible or book of their choice (from their personal library), or for a new one-volume reader’s Bible of their choice. (While these are not your only options, we have reviewed the following: ESV, CSB, NIV.) If you choose a book you already own, you will be responsible to ship it to Pro Libris. Pro Libris will then cover the return shipping to get it back to you when it is ready.
  10. Additional-prize winners (if in US) will select either a copy of both Knowable Word and Sowable Word or a one-volume reader’s Bible of their choice. (While these are not your only options, we have reviewed the following: ESV, CSB, NIV.)

What People Thought

  • Someone who completed the Bible in 67 days: “This was a great experience! It was really nice having the story of scripture fresh on my mind from start to end. I will definitely be doing this again.”
  • 30 days: “You see the major themes more clearly and you see the interconnected-ness of the Bible by being in different sections just days apart.”
  • 41 days: “This is my ninth year with this challenge. This time I was inspired by a friend to make time to read large books in one sitting. So I allocated several Saturday evenings and Sunday afternoons for two to three hour reading blocks. This greatly improved my understanding of the stories of God. Something that came to light for me this year is what God says about other nations — Edom, Syria, Egypt, and so on. Through this, I saw parallels to our own culture and God’s judgment amidst salvation and redemption. Convicting and encouraging!”
  • 90 days: “It was very exciting and profitable. It was my first time reading the Bible this quickly and felt like my grasp of the Bible and individual books of the Bible grew exponentially.”

Others were not as enthusiastic, but still endured through the challenge:

  • 79 days: “It is not my favorite way to read the whole Bible. I’ve read the NT quick in another Bible challenge. I’ve not read the whole Bible this fast. I prefer to read a few chapters or a chapter at a time-in a day.”
  • 60 days: “I was not a big fan of it. Made me feel rushed and not able to digest it.”
  • 67 days: “I was not able to get everything. Most of what I have already studied jumped out in the context even more, and made me appreciate the when and where. Similarly, I have come to realize that the Bible is not just a tool to be studied, but instead something to simply enjoy. God’s word is also a story meant for our enjoyment which also gives us incredible, life saving truth as well.”

Perhaps my favorite response came from a first-timer, who completed the Bible in 81 days:

I’ve read through the Bible chronologically, but not in such a short time period. This method was superior for getting a good overview of scripture, as well as remembering related details. This was so effective, I plan on doing this again next winter… Thank you for this challenge. It was a fantastic experience and its own reward.

What Folks Thought about Reading the Entire Bible Quickly

This year, 28 people completed our Bible reading challenge and entered the drawing for a top grain leather ESV Bible. Many thanks once again to Crossway for sponsoring this year’s grand prize giveaway. The good people at Crossway really want to help you read God’s word, and they have generously supported our efforts to promote rambunctious Bible reading.

Some Stats

50% of those who entered used a combination of reading and audio. 29% used a physical Bible alone. About 10% used audio alone, and about 10% used e-Bibles or Bible apps.

The most common reading plan was canonical (54%). 14% followed a chronological plan, and the rest used a wide variety of reading plans.

54% read the ESV. 14% read the NLT. The rest read the NIV, NKJV, HCSB, CSB, NASB, or LSB.

Over a third of the entries were from folks who have completed this challenge more than once. One said he enjoyed it so much that he is going to keep reading the entire Bible every 3 months for the rest of the year.

Some Liked It

Here’s what some others had to say, identified by the number of days it took:

  • 88 days: It was amazing. So many things were made so much clearer by reading different parts of the bible so close together in time.
  • 88 days: It was kinda nice having that time set aside for the word.
  • 72 days: Love it! So easy to see the big picture.
  • 69 days: This is now my 7th year and I enjoy the challenge! … I so enjoy as I read to make note of books and certain chapters I want to go back to later and do more “digging.” It is a wonderful way to “see” and “hear” the full counsel of God… I have ended every year with the book of Deuteronomy. I need to be reminded of God’s faithfulness and amazing love to His people, and to take to heart the words of Moses in Chapter 32:46-47 “Take to heart all these words I am giving you as a warning…they are not meaningless…they are your life..”
  • 66 days: It was a very inspirational and enjoyable experience as I read large chunks of scripture. I was able to make some connections between different books. As some of the readings would be still fresh in my mind.
  • 70 days: It is a great thing to read the entire Bible because it really puts it into perspective. There are parts I didn’t know about untill I read them. It also familirizes myself with some of the most unkown books of the Bible. Reading it fast is way different than meditating but I was still able to absorb some of the information.
  • 60 days: I really enjoy this experience and find it helpful. I am better able to see the big picture and link passages together. This challenge has also helped with my Bible reading in general. In the past, I struggled to read through the Bible completely in a year. Now it isn’t difficult to read it more than once a year. Last year I read it twice. Now that I’ve finished this challenge, I’m ready to start over at a slower pace. I also really appreciate reader’s versions for this challenge, they are very helpful.
  • 76 days: I enjoyed reading large chunks of text at a time. The narratives were more cohesive. I noticed repeated words and themes. There was less time to procrastinate or get behind schedule. Psalms and Proverbs were difficult to read in large chunks. Hebrews and Revelation were fascinating to as a whole text. Reading large chunks generated questions that I will now chase down and also created ‘ah-ha’ connections between prophets, history and then carried into the NT writings.
  • 76 days: I am so glad I did this again the year. It is a great way to wrap up 2023 and plunge into 2024. Seeing the connections and single thread of God’s hand throughout the entire Word is very encouraging. As I read, I created a list of questions and topics to launch my deeper study for 2024.
  • 63 days: Every year I do this (eight years running), the consistency and coordination of the Word is reinforced and illuminated for me. This is a VERY doable challenge for almost anyone and I encourage my friends and family to take up the challenge.
  • 84 days: Challenging, required a good bit of discipline initially. It now makes reading through the bible in one year almost like a “walk in the park”. Using the Crossway ESV Chronological Bible gave a better understanding, and detail, of passages that get repeated eg in Kings and Chronicles, and also the 4 gospels with repeated events. Seeing God’s redemptive plan throughout the bible from Genesis to Revelation was a real blessing.

Some Didn’t Like It

I don’t mind mentioning that this sort of reading is not for everyone. Nor is it the best way to read at all times. I have high respect for those who persisted to complete the challenge even when it wasn’t their favorite thing:

  • 89 days: Honestly, I felt that I was speed-reading, and I did not have time to meditate on what I was reading.
  • 90 days: It felt rushed to read completely on 90 days.
  • 90 days: I’m glad I did it but it’s not my favorite way to read through Scripture. I don’t feel like I was really spending quality time in the word, but just reading to read.
  • 83 days: It was hard, but very satisfying! However, I’m ready to read slowly through one book 🙂
  • 90 days: It was like drinking out of a fire hydrant. This was my first time ever reading the whole Bible straight through. I liked it. My parents did it too, so I got to do it with them. I’d like to do it a little bit slower next time.

Looking Ahead to Next Year’s Challenge

Thanks to all who participated. If you thought about it, or got started but didn’t finish, we hope to be back at it again next year. Expect to hear from us in November to launch the 10th annual reading challenge.

I’d love to hear your ideas for how to make next year’s challenge more grand. So far, a number of folks have requested continued prizes of reader’s Bibles or Scripture journals. But the most commonly requested prize so far is a Logos package.

Announcing our 2024 Bible Reading Challenge

We believe one of the best ways to learn to study the Bible is to read it. A lot of it. Over and over again. That won’t give you everything you need to understand it, but it will get you quite a long way toward the goal. As in marching through Kadesh all the way to the peaks of Pisgah. All you have to do is look down toward the valley, trust that God meant what he said, and finish the job from there. Don’t listen to those fools who speak of giants and grasshoppers. Just look at the size of those grapes. And the size of the God who gives them.

If you’re not sure what I mean by all this Kadesh/Pisgah stuff, then maybe this is your year to read the entire Bible in 90 days. Milk and honey are yours for the taking. Not the under-the-tongue sort (Song 4:11) but the flowing-land sort (Deut 26:9). Though, of course, there is a theological connection between the two.

But I digress and perhaps ought to get to the point.

The Challenge

I’m writing to announce our 9th annual Bible reading challenge. The challenge is to read the entire Bible within 90 days. If you wish, you may begin today. Regardless of when you begin, your 90-day period must end no later than March 31, 2024.

And why—you ask—would you embark on such a strange venture? (“Has the day finally come,” they inquire, “when the Lord has struck with madness the riders of this horse we call the blogosphere?” Zech 12:4) I can think of at least three reasons.

  1. Your grasp of the Bible’s big picture will surge like a COVID case count in winter.
  2. Your reward in heaven will be great.
  3. We’ve got a sweet set of prizes to urge you on in the present age.

All who complete the challenge are invited to fill out the form below (which we’ll share repeatedly as the twilight of March draws nigh). One grand prize winner will be selected at random to win an ESV Wide Margin Reference Bible in Top Grain Leather, generously provided by the good people at Crossway Bibles. Yes, you read that right: This Bible has top grain leather. This is one of those gorgeous “premium” Bibles that might not normally fit the budget.

One additional winner will be selected to receive a one-volume reader’s Bible of their choice. Physical prizes are limited to the continental United States. Winners in other parts of the world will receive a $50 Amazon gift card via email.

Official Rules

Here are the rules:

  1. You must read (not scan or skim) all 66 books of the Protestant Bible. You may choose the translation and reading plan (canonical, chronological, etc.). You don’t have to stop and meditate on every detail, but the Lord sees and knows when you are being honest about reading and not skimming. Listening to an unabridged audio Bible is acceptable. You may also use any combination of audio and visual reading, as long as you’ve read or listened to the entire Bible within the allotted time period.
  2. You must read the entire Bible within a 90-day period.
  3. The last day of that 90-day period must be between November 4, 2023 and March 31, 2024. If you’d like to understand why we recommend such fast-paced reading, see our Bible reading plan for readers.
  4. To enter the drawing, you must fill out the survey below, letting us know the dates you read and what you thought of the speed-reading process. Your thoughts do not have to be glowing, but they should be honest; you’ll still be entered into the drawing if you didn’t enjoy your speed-read.
  5. Any submissions to the form below that don’t meet the requirements or appear to be fabricated will be deleted. For example: multiple entries with different data, date of completion not between November 2, 2023 and March 31, 2024, “What I thought about the experience” has nothing to do with Bible reading, or date of completion is later than the date of entry submission (please don’t try to enter the drawing if you plan to read the Bible; only enter once you have completed reading it).
  6. In the first week of April 2024, we will randomly select 2 winners from those who have submitted the form. We will email the winners to get their shipping addresses. If a winner does not respond to our request for a shipping address within 1 week, a new winner will be selected in their place.
  7. The first prize winner (if continental US) will receive a copy of the ESV Wide Margin Reference Bible in Top Grain Leather. The second prize winner (if anywhere in the US) will get their choice of a one-volume reader’s Bible (While these are not your only options, we have reviewed the following: ESV, CSB, NIV.).
